Tom Lee Sees $2 Trillion Wealth Transfer Fueling Crypto Demand as BitMine Buys More Ether

BitMine chairman Tom Lee says a $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion generational wealth transfer between 2026 and 2028 could drive crypto demand, as the firm buys another 12,532 ether and moves within about 76,000 tokens of owning 5% of the ether supply.

Key points

  • Tom Lee said a generational wealth transfer of $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion between 2026 and 2028 could drive the next wave of crypto demand.
  • BitMine Immersion Technologies bought another 12,532 ether last week, lifting holdings to 6,028,946 ETH, about 4.9% of the total supply.
  • Lee said BitMine will stop accumulating ether once it reaches its goal of owning 5% of the supply.

Tom Lee, chairman of ether treasury firm BitMine Immersion Technologies, said on Monday that a generational wealth transfer of up to $2 trillion could help power the next crypto bull market. His comments came as the firm bought more ether and moved closer to owning 5% of the token’s supply.

The remarks landed alongside BitMine’s latest weekly treasury update. Its ether stockpile had already crossed 6 million tokens the week before, and the company has kept buying through a volatile stretch for the market. BitMine, chaired by the Fundstrat co-founder, is the largest corporate holder of ether and ranks as the second-largest crypto treasury overall, behind Michael Saylor’s Strategy.

“The wealth transfer underway is expected to support the upcoming crypto bull market as those inheriting wealth are younger and likely have a higher risk appetite for crypto and equities,” Lee said in the statement.

Lee pointed to estimates from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and Fundstrat that between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion in wealth could change hands from 2026 through 2028. His reasoning is that younger heirs tend to carry a higher tolerance for risk, which could lift their allocations to assets such as cryptocurrencies and stocks. He also cited Wall Street’s growing use of blockchains to represent financial assets, the spread of artificial intelligence applications, and treasury companies holding tokens for the long term as possible drivers of a new rally.

On the buying side, BitMine said it picked up another 12,532 ether last week, worth roughly $32 million at Monday’s price. That lifted total holdings to 6,028,946 ETH, valued near $15.3 billion, or about 4.9% of ether’s 122.1 million token supply. The purchase leaves the firm around 76,000 ether short of its 5% goal, a mark it could reach in about six weeks at last week’s pace.

Lee has said BitMine will stop accumulating ether once it hits that 5% threshold. The company has bought ether every week since it pivoted to an ether-focused strategy in June 2025. BitMine has staked about 5.07 million ether, or 84% of its holdings, and projects roughly $336 million in annualized staking revenue at current yields. Its combined crypto, cash, and marketable securities reached $16.2 billion, according to the company.

Ether traded near $2,528 on Monday, while BitMine shares changed hands around $24. The stop-buying plan would remove one of the market’s steadiest ether buyers once the 5% target is met, a prospect traders have begun to weigh.
