QUICK BITE

  • OpenAI launches SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine providing real-time internet information with organized, summarized results.
  • SearchGPT will be integrated into ChatGPT, offering conversational responses with current data and clear source links.
  • The prototype is part of OpenAI’s strategy to lead in “multimodality,” combining various AI-generated media forms into ChatGPT.

Microsoft-backed, artificial intelligence (AI) giant, OpenAI is launching SearchGPT, a new AI search engine that provides real-time internet information.

The search engine starts with a large textbox asking, “What are you looking for?” Instead of just listing links, SearchGPT organizes and summarizes the results. For instance, it might summarize information on music festivals and provide brief descriptions with links.

In another example, it explains when to plant tomatoes and details different plant varieties. After receiving results, you can ask follow-up questions or explore additional relevant links through the sidebar.

There’s also a feature called “visual answers,” but details on how it works were not available from OpenAI before publication.

SearchGPT will initially launch with a select group of users and publishers before a broader rollout. Instead of becoming a standalone product, SearchGPT will be integrated into ChatGPT. It is a temporary prototype that merges OpenAI’s AI models, like ChatGPT, with internet search capabilities.

In addition, it will provide conversational responses with current information and clear links to relevant sources. This positions OpenAI as a direct competitor to major search engines, including Google and Bing, which is backed by OpenAI’s largest investor, Microsoft.

Valued at over $80 billion by investors, OpenAI is under pressure to lead the generative AI (GenAI) market while managing significant costs for processors and infrastructure.

The company’s new mini AI model and the SearchGPT prototype are part of its strategy to excel in “multimodality,” which aims to integrate various forms of AI-generated media—such as text, images, audio, video, and search—into one tool: ChatGPT.
