BitMEX Co-Founder Arthur Hayes Backs Ordinals Wallet Oyl and Launches Airheads NFT Series

Arthur Hayes, Chief Investment Officer at Maelstrom and Co-Founder and Former CEO of BitMEX, recently shared in a blog post that his family office, Maelstrom, has invested in the Bitcoin Ordinals wallet Oyl. He also mentioned that they collaborated to create an Ordinals series called Airheads.

“At Maelstrom, I tasked the head of the investment team, Akshat Vaidya, with funding an Ordinals project. Through diligent research, we invested in the Oyl wallet. To show artists what is possible using the Ordinals technology and the features of the Oyl wallet, I collaborated on an Ordinals drop called Airheads,” stated Hayes.

Airheads is a collection of characters inspired by balloons, reminiscent of Jeff Koons’ playful yet edgy balloon-like creations. The characters symbolize the inflationary pressures we all face, appearing large and beautiful due to metaphorical inflation. 

Each Airhead is a unique Bitcoin Ordinal designed to represent and flaunt one’s wealth, visually illustrating the size and value of a digital portfolio at the time of minting through recursive art.

There are 10,000 Airheads available, divided into 10 tiers based on portfolio size. The characters’ sequential ranking and tier differentiation reflect asset weightings, making them a competitive and entertaining way to display wealth. Interestingly, some of the most exciting characters can be found in the lower tiers, adding an element of surprise and potential value. 

Also, each Airhead is wrapped in one of 25 randomly assigned, mysterious packaging variants. Some packages are thematically linked to the characters across tiers, making certain combinations rare and highly desirable.

To obtain an Airhead, you can join the whitelist opening on August 6 by using the Oyl Wallet and earning Experience Points through quests. Alternatively, you can compete on the leaderboard by building the largest portfolio in the Oyl ecosystem, with the top 10,000 participants receiving an allocation.
