  • The release is part of Base’s “OnChain Summer” initiative, following Atari’s earlier blockchain version of Asteroids on the platform.

Atari is re-releasing its classic 1976 game, Breakout, on Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network, Base.

As part of Base’s “OnChain Summer,” players can compete on the Atari Breakout leaderboard. Those with the highest scores can win weekly prizes like a retro 2600+ game console, gift cards, and more.

Atari first announced their partnership with Base in July, starting with a blockchain-based version of their classic Asteroids game, where players control a simple spaceship to destroy asteroids.

In Breakout, a game designed by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell and a pre-Apple Steve Wozniak, players use a paddle and ball to break through brick walls. In the latest release, Atari introduced new modes like Degen, Bitcoin, and Higher, which can be accessed by hitting special bricks. Points double for 10 seconds!

To play and mint a Breakout NFT for 0.0015 ETH (around $3.60), players need to connect their Coinbase, MetaMask, Rainbow, or WalletConnect wallets. The proceeds from the mint will go to the developers and artists who worked on each game, according to Base.

Additionally, Tyler Drewitz, Atari’s director, mentioned during a Base Twitter stream in July that all scores are recorded on-chain, and that’s where things get really exciting. Also, there’s a weekly leaderboard, along with an overall leaderboard featuring some pretty substantial prizes.
