Azra Games, a blockchain-based video game developer, has successfully raised $42.7 million in its Series A funding round. The round was led by Pantera Capital, with participation from other notable investors, including a16z crypto, A16Z GAMES, and NFX. This latest funding brings Azra’s total backing to $68.3 million, underscoring investor confidence in the company’s vision to revolutionize mobile role-playing games (RPGs).

As per their press release, the funds will fuel the development of Azra’s flagship project, currently code-named “Project Legends,” as well as other upcoming titles.

According to Azra Games founder and veteran game designer Mark Otero, known for his work on Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, the company is working to define what he calls the “4th generation” of mobile RPGs. This new generation aims to deliver console-quality experiences on mobile devices, with open-world gameplay, real-time battles, and immersive narratives.

Otero also highlighted the evolution of mobile RPGs, from simple text-based games to today’s 3D experiences with advanced graphics and controls. He believes the future of mobile gaming will compete with PC and console titles, providing players with rich, dynamic environments.

“With our expanding expert team and robust funding, we’re excited to bring Western gamers true console/PC-quality RPG experiences on their mobile devices,” Otero said.

In addition to game development, the funding will support the expansion of Azra Labs, a research team focused on using artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate the creation of AAA mobile content. The company is also looking to grow its global team and is actively hiring talent to push the boundaries of mobile gaming.

In May 2022, Azra Games raised $15 million in a seed funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), with additional participation from NFX, Coinbase Ventures, Play Ventures, and Franklin Templeton.
