  • Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools in iOS 18.1 beta can reformat text but warns users about potential quality issues with AI-generated content.
  • The tool displays warnings when encountering swear words, drug references, or violent content, but still provides suggestions.
  • Apple’s approach aims to avoid controversy by alerting users to sensitive terms, while still offering rewriting capabilities for most content.

Apple introduced its Apple Intelligence features in the iOS 18.1 developer beta last month. One of the new features, Writing Tools, lets you reformat or rewrite text using Apple’s AI models. However, it may notify you that AI-generated suggestions might not always be high quality, especially for certain topics.

You can use Apple Intelligence to rework text anywhere in the system. However, if you try to rewrite content with swear words like “sh**” or “bastard,” you’ll get a warning saying, “Writing Tools was not designed to handle this type of content.” It also cautions that the quality of rewriting may vary.

Other users have noticed this as well, with the tool sometimes failing to maintain the original tone when rewriting sentences.

Technology enthusiast, who goes by the name “Alvin” on X (formerly Twitter) has shared a hilarious video of Apple Intelligence.

According to a report by TechCrunch, the warning doesn’t just appear for swear words. It also shows up when there are mentions of drugs, killing, or murder.

Even if Apple Intelligence displays the warning, it still provides suggestions for sentences containing words or phrases it isn’t trained to handle. In one test, when “sh***y” was replaced with “crappy” to bypass the warning, the AI tool still offered the same suggestion as before.

The TechCrunch report also states that Apple likely wants to avoid controversy by restricting its AI from rewriting certain words, topics, and tones. The Apple Intelligence writing tools aren’t designed to create new content from scratch, but Apple wants to alert users when the AI encounters sensitive terms.
